Burton Park
Burton Park is the oldest and best known of our developed parks. The central location and diversity of activities help to draw a wide spectrum of users and is heavy utilized year-round. It currently contains Madsen softball diamond, Flanagan baseball field, a large soccer field, three tennis courts, two full basketball courts, a tennis practice court, two horseshoe pits, the Kiwanis Recreation Building, two children’s play areas (one completely fence-enclosed and each with a play structure, slide, and swings), park benches, picnic tables, barbecue pits, and a turfed play area. The park has extensive landscaping throughout, including a number of mature trees.
A walking path is available in Burton Park. The “Make Time for Fitness” walking program is in partnership with Sequoia Hospital, the San Francisco Giants and San Carlos Parks and Recreation. The path is one of several projects in partnership with Sequoia Health and Wellness Center and San Carlos Parks and Recreation to address the health of our community. The walking path aligns with the existing sidewalks in Burton Park, highlighting a desired route with measured distance. The path is designed to promote walking, with informational signs and distance measurements outlining a one-mile path (3 laps).
Burton Park has been the location for both Hometown Days in the spring and the Concerts in the Park series in the summer.
The children’s play areas are very heavily used year round. The basketball and tennis courts are also quite popular.
Burton Park Playground Project
A group of dedicated volunteer parents came together and enlisted the City of San Carlos, local businesses, community organizations and preschools to help dramatically improve the Burton Park Playgrounds. The Parks & Recreation Foundation of San Carlos eagerly joined in the fundraising efforts.
The City has committed $415,000 from Capital Improvment Program (CIP) appropriations for this project. Thanks to the volunteer committee and the generosity of the San Carlos community and businesses, we have reached the goal of $850,000 for this project. The result of these community efforts is a complete overhaul of the two existing Burton Park playgrounds as well as a new, fun water spray area. Burton Park will house the first fully inclusive playground in San Mateo County.
